Costco Garage Door Opener Bundles: Worth the Hype?
What comes in Costco's opener bundles, the pros and cons, and whether one is right for you.
Costco's garage door opener bundles get a lot of attention because they pack in extras such as keypads and remotes at a good price. Here's what's in them, the pros and cons, and who they suit.
What's in a Costco Opener Bundle?
Bundles usually include the opener plus extras:
- The opener: chain drive (louder, usually cheaper) or belt drive (quieter, better for attached garages)
- Remotes: typically two or more, sometimes mini keychain remotes
- A wireless keypad: PIN entry, and on some Chamberlain bundles a video keypad with a built-in camera
- Smart features: Wi-Fi control through the brand's app (myQ for Chamberlain)
- Battery backup: included in some higher-end bundles
Chamberlain and Skylink are the brands you'll see most often.
Models You'll Commonly Find
- Chamberlain ¾ HP smart belt-drive bundle: Wi-Fi with myQ, a wireless video keypad and remotes. Quiet, and a good fit for attached garages.
- Skylink Atoms ¾ HP opener kit: chain drive with two remotes and a wireless keypad. Newer Atoms models have built-in Wi-Fi with the Skylink app; some older kits needed a separate hub for smart features.
- Chamberlain 1¼ HP-equivalent Wi-Fi opener with battery backup: extra power for heavy doors and frequent use, with myQ.
Current models and prices change often.
Pros
- Value: often priced below similar models at hardware stores, with more accessories included.
- Smart features: control and check your door from your phone.
- Returns and warranty: Costco's return policy plus the manufacturer's warranty.
Cons
- Availability: many bundles are online only, with shipping waits, and some are seasonal.
- Installation isn't included: professional installation adds to the cost.
- App differences: Skylink's app is less polished than myQ.
- Opener only: the bundle won't fix worn springs, cables or rollers, which should be checked before a new opener goes on.
Should You Buy One?
If you want a capable opener with lots of accessories at a good price, and you're comfortable buying online, a Costco bundle is good value. If you want the quietest opener, a specific brand, in-store pickup or one company to handle everything, buy through an installer. Either way, make sure the opener is sized for your door.
